Homemade New York Style Bagels with Cream Cheese & Chives

Updated: May 15, 2020

Since we have been staying at home due to the coronavirus, I have been missing my favorite bagel place like crazy - Old School Bagel in Tulsa. They make their bagels from scratch and have the best bagel sandwiches and decadent cookies. To get my bagel fix, I went searching for the perfect bagel recipe and found one here. Although this recipe has you doing most of the handy work, I adjusted it to make it easier and also used my bread machine.

Ingredients

  • Active Dry Yeast

  • Sugar

  • Water

  • Self-rising flour

  • Salt

  • Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel Seasoning

Instructions

  • In your bread machine add 3 and 1/2 cups self-rising flour, 2 teaspoons active dry yeast, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons sugar, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1 and 1/2 cups water. Mix together well so the flour doesn’t stay at the bottom of your machine since this is a thick recipe. Then, set your bread machine to the dough function and let the machine do all of the work.

  • Once your dough is ready, move it to a floured surface and knead the bread and make it into a log. Then cut the log into 8 pieces. For each piece, roll into a ball then use a rolling pin and make thick round discs. Once you are done with that, use your index finger and make a circle in the middle of the discs. When you’re done, move the discs to a pan with olive oil spray and cover with a towel and let them rest about 10 minutes. During this step, go ahead and start pre-heating your oven to 425 degrees.

  • Now, one of the most important steps - boiling your bagels. In boiling water, place half the bagels in the boiling water and wait until they rise to the top (about a minute). Then flip them and boil them on the other side for about two minutes. Repeat this step with your other bagels. Once your are done boiling your bagels, move them to your sheet pan that has olive oil spray.

  • If you want to keep the bagels plain, you can throw them in the oven. But if you want to make them really good do this - beat a couple eggs for an egg wash and brush on the bagels then use Trader Joe’s Everything but Bagel Seasoning and sprinkle this yuminess on the bagels.

  • Now, pop the bagels in the oven and cook for about 22 minutes and wallah - gorgeous, restaurant-style bagels!

  • To accompany the bagels, I also whipped up some cream cheese and chives. To make: use one block of softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon crushed caraway seeds, 3 teaspoons green olive juice, and 3 tablespoons fresh chopped chives. Mix together and enjoy!
